Paneer for babies
Paneer is fresh cheese made without salt, which makes it unusual: high protein and calcium with almost none of the sodium that limits other cheeses.
When can babies have paneer?
From around 6 months, crumbled or in thin strips, made from pasteurised milk.
How do you serve paneer to a baby?
The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.
-
6–8 months
Crumble finely and mix into mashed vegetable or rice, or cut into thin strips and pan-fry briefly to firm the outside.
-
9–11 months
Crumbled or in small thin strips, or cooked soft in a mild curry.
-
12–18 months
Strips or small pieces in curries and stir-fries. Not cubes.
-
18–24 months
As the family eats it, cut small.
Prep tip
Simmering paneer in a sauce for ten minutes softens it considerably — much easier for a baby than pan-fried paneer, which firms up.
Storage
Keeps three days refrigerated in water, changed daily. It freezes but goes crumbly.
Is paneer a choking hazard for babies?
Paneer is firm and springy — cubes are the wrong shape, the same issue as any firm cheese. Crumble it or cut it into thin strips for the first year. It softens when cooked in a sauce.
Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.
Is paneer a common allergen?
Paneer is a milk product and milk is one of the nine common allergens. Use pasteurised paneer for a baby.
Is paneer healthy for babies?
Because paneer is made without salt, it delivers the calcium and protein of cheese without the sodium problem — genuinely useful when a baby's whole daily allowance is under 1 g of salt. It also holds its shape in cooking, so it works in a mild curry alongside vegetables.

Common questions about paneer
Is paneer better than cheddar for a baby?
On salt, substantially — paneer is made without any. On calcium and protein they are comparable. Paneer is the better everyday choice.
Can I make paneer at home?
Yes — whole milk brought to the boil, split with lemon juice, strained through muslin and pressed. Twenty minutes, no salt, and you control everything in it.
