Grains
Couscous for babies
Couscous is the fastest grain there is — boiling water and five minutes. The grains are tiny, so bind them into something a baby can pick up.
When can babies have couscous?
From around 6 months. Couscous is made from durum wheat, so it is a wheat food and counts toward that allergen introduction. Wholewheat couscous adds fibre.
How do you serve couscous to a baby?
The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.
-
6–8 months
Cook, then mix with a moist sauce, mashed vegetable or dal so it holds together enough to scoop. Or press into small patties with egg and bake.
-
9–11 months
Loose couscous for pincer practice, or mixed into a stew.
-
12–18 months
Couscous with vegetables and a sauce, or as a side.
-
18–24 months
Family portions. Watch the salt in flavoured couscous packets — they are usually very high.
Prep tip
Flavoured couscous packets are essentially stock cubes with grain attached. Buy plain and add your own vegetables.
Storage
Cooked couscous keeps three days refrigerated. It dries out — loosen with a splash of water when reheating.
Is couscous a choking hazard for babies?
Cooked couscous is soft and poses very little risk, though dry couscous should never be offered. The grains are too small to pick up before the pincer grasp — mix them into a sauce or press them into a patty.
Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.
Is couscous a common allergen?
Couscous is durum wheat, one of the nine common allergens. If bread or pasta has already been introduced without a problem, wheat is covered.
Is couscous healthy for babies?
Couscous is exceptionally high in selenium for a grain and provides straightforward energy. Its practical value is speed — five minutes from kettle to plate, which matters more than it sounds when a baby is hungry now.

Common questions about couscous
Is couscous a grain or a pasta?
Technically a pasta — it is made from semolina, the same durum wheat flour as pasta. That means it is a wheat food for allergen purposes.
Can babies have flavoured couscous?
Better not. The flavour sachets are largely salt. Buy plain and cook it in unsalted stock or water.
