Pineapple for babies
Pineapple brings a lot of vitamin C and a lot of acid. Expect a red ring around the mouth; it is irritation, not allergy.
When can babies have pineapple?
From around 6 months, ripe, cored and cut into thin spears. Expect some facial redness from the acidity.
How do you serve pineapple to a baby?
The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.
-
6–8 months
Ripe pineapple, core removed, cut into thin spears along the grain. Apply barrier cream to the face first.
-
9–11 months
Small soft pieces for the pincer grasp, core removed.
-
12–18 months
Chunks or spears. Chopped into yogurt tames the acidity.
-
18–24 months
Chunks and rings with the core out. Family portions.
Prep tip
A barrier cream — plain petroleum jelly or a zinc cream — on the cheeks and chin before an acidic fruit prevents most of the redness.
Storage
Cut pineapple keeps three to four days refrigerated. Tinned pineapple should be in juice, not syrup, and drained.
Is pineapple a choking hazard for babies?
Fresh pineapple is fibrous and stringy, which is harder to break down than it looks. Cut it into thin spears along the grain and remove the tough core entirely. Under-ripe pineapple is firm and should be cooked or left.
Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.
Is pineapple a common allergen?
Pineapple is not one of the nine common allergens. The red mouth and tingling most children get is contact irritation from acidity and bromelain, not an allergic reaction. Hives away from the contact area, vomiting or swelling would be different.
Is pineapple healthy for babies?
Pineapple is one of the highest vitamin C fruits and exceptionally high in manganese. Its bromelain enzyme helps break down protein — it also contributes to the mouth tingling some children notice.

Common questions about pineapple
Why does pineapple make my baby's mouth sore?
Bromelain, an enzyme that breaks down protein, plus high acidity. It is irritation, not allergy. Barrier cream before, a wipe after, and serving it with yogurt all help.
Is tinned pineapple okay?
In juice rather than syrup, drained, yes. It is softer than fresh, which suits a beginner, but the canning destroys the bromelain and some of the vitamin C.
