Dragon fruit for babies
Dragon fruit is one of the softest fruits there is once it is ripe, and its tiny seeds are entirely harmless. The only difficulty is finding a ripe one.
When can babies have dragon fruit?
From around 6 months, ripe and peeled. A ripe dragon fruit gives to gentle pressure like a ripe avocado.
How do you serve dragon fruit to a baby?
The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.
-
6–8 months
Cut in half, scoop out the flesh, and cut into finger-width spears. Or mash it.
-
9–11 months
Cubes for the pincer grasp.
-
12–18 months
Cubes, or scooped from the half with a spoon.
-
18–24 months
Cubes and slices. Family portions.
Prep tip
Buy them slightly firm and leave them on the counter for two to three days. An unripe dragon fruit is bland and dense; a ripe one is soft and sweet.
Storage
Ripen at room temperature, then refrigerate for up to five days. Cut flesh keeps two days.
Is dragon fruit a choking hazard for babies?
Ripe dragon fruit is soft and low risk. The skin is inedible and must be removed entirely. The tiny black seeds are like kiwi seeds — harmless and pass through.
Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.
Is dragon fruit a common allergen?
Dragon fruit is not one of the nine most common food allergens. Any food can trigger a reaction, though, so offer it on its own the first time and watch for hives, vomiting, swelling or a change in breathing over the next two hours.
Is dragon fruit healthy for babies?
Modest but useful vitamin C, fibre and magnesium. Its practical appeal is the texture — soft enough for a beginner, mild enough that almost no baby objects — and the novelty of an unfamiliar colour and flavour, which is worth something for building acceptance of variety.

Common questions about dragon fruit
Are dragon fruit seeds safe?
Yes. They are tiny, like kiwi seeds, and pass through harmlessly. They may be visible in the nappy.
My baby's nappy has turned pink.
Red-fleshed dragon fruit contains betacyanin, the same pigment as beetroot, which colours urine and stool pink or red. It is harmless and passes within a day.
