Rye for babies
Rye bread is denser and higher in fibre than wheat bread, which makes it filling. Toast it and cut it into strips, and keep an eye on the salt.
When can babies have rye?
From around 6 months, toasted and cut into thin strips. Rye contains gluten and is not suitable in coeliac disease.
How do you serve rye to a baby?
The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.
-
6–8 months
Toast lightly, cut into thin finger-width strips, and spread thinly with avocado, hummus or cream cheese.
-
9–11 months
Toast strips or small pieces.
-
12–18 months
Rye toast, sandwiches cut into strips.
-
18–24 months
As the family eats it. Watch salt in dark rye and pumpernickel.
Prep tip
Cut rye thinner than wheat bread. It is much denser, so a standard-thickness slice is a lot of bread for a small mouth.
Storage
Rye bread keeps longer than wheat bread and freezes well sliced.
Is rye a choking hazard for babies?
Dense rye bread is heavy and can be difficult to break down — toast it and cut thin strips. Whole rye kernels and very seedy rye breads are firm and should wait until well past 12 months.
Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.
Is rye a common allergen?
Rye contains gluten and is not suitable in coeliac disease. It is not one of the nine common allergens, though some wheat-allergic children also react to rye.
Is rye healthy for babies?
Rye carries considerably more fibre than wheat and a useful amount of iron and magnesium. Its high fibre content is a genuine advantage for a constipated baby, though very high fibre in a small stomach can crowd out calories — mix it into the rotation rather than making it the only bread.
| Fibre | Very high |
|---|---|
| Manganese | High |
| Magnesium | Good source |
| Iron (non-heme) | Good source |
| Sodium (bread) | Moderate to high |
| Iron per serving | ~0.7 mg |
Common questions about rye
Is rye bread good for babies?
It is a good wholegrain with more fibre and iron than white bread. Keep portions modest — very high fibre fills a small stomach before the calories go in.
Is rye gluten-free?
No. Rye, wheat and barley all contain gluten.
