Fruit
Cantaloupe for babies
Cantaloupe is one of the highest-vitamin-A fruits and softens to an ideal texture when ripe. Wash the outside before cutting: melon rind is a known listeria route.
When can babies have cantaloupe?
From around 6 months, ripe, with the rind removed and the outside washed before cutting.
How do you serve cantaloupe to a baby?
The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.
-
6–8 months
Cut ripe melon into long spears, rind removed. Roll in infant cereal if too slippery to hold.
-
9–11 months
Small pieces for the pincer grasp.
-
12–18 months
Cubes or spears.
-
18–24 months
Slices and chunks, family portions.
Prep tip
Scrub the rind under running water before cutting. Bacteria on the skin transfer to the flesh on the knife, and melon has been linked to listeria outbreaks for exactly this reason.
Storage
Refrigerate cut melon promptly and use within three days. Do not leave cut melon at room temperature.
Is cantaloupe a choking hazard for babies?
Ripe cantaloupe is soft and slippery. Serve as spears rather than cubes in the first year — a slippery cube can slide back before a baby manages it. Rind should be removed entirely.
Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.
Is cantaloupe a common allergen?
Cantaloupe is not one of the nine most common food allergens. Any food can trigger a reaction, though, so offer it on its own the first time and watch for hives, vomiting, swelling or a change in breathing over the next two hours.
Is cantaloupe healthy for babies?
Cantaloupe carries an unusually high amount of both vitamin A and vitamin C for a melon — more than most other fruits on this list. It is also very hydrating.
| Vitamin A | Very high |
|---|---|
| Vitamin C | Very high |
| Potassium | Good source |
| Water | Very high |
| Iron per serving | ~0.2 mg |
Common questions about cantaloupe
Why does melon need washing if I am cutting the rind off?
Because the knife carries whatever is on the rind through into the flesh. Melon rind sits on soil and has been implicated in listeria and salmonella outbreaks. A scrub takes ten seconds.
Is honeydew the same?
Similar texture and handling, but considerably lower in vitamin A and C. Cantaloupe is the more nutritious melon.
