Peach for babies

A truly ripe peach needs nothing done to it beyond removing the stone. An unripe one is firm and should be cooked.

When can babies have peach?

From around 6 months, ripe and peeled, or cooked if firm. Peach is a good summer first fruit — sweet, soft and easy to prepare in bulk.

How do you serve peach to a baby?

The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.

  1. 6–8 months

Peel a ripe peach, remove the stone, and cut into finger-width wedges. Roll in infant cereal if too slippery. Firm peaches: quarter, remove the stone, and steam for five minutes.

  2. 9–11 months

Bite-sized pieces of ripe peach, skin off.

  3. 12–18 months

Wedges or chunks, skin on if soft. Chopped into yogurt or porridge.

  4. 18–24 months

Whole halves with the stone out, or sliced. Family portions.

Prep tip

A ripe peach's skin slips off after 30 seconds in boiling water and a plunge into cold. Much faster than peeling with a knife.

Storage

Ripen at room temperature, then refrigerate. Cooked peach purée freezes well.

Is peach a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk Moderate

Ripe peach is soft and low risk. Firm peach behaves like raw apple and should be cooked. The stone is a serious hazard and must be removed completely — never hand a baby a peach half with the pit still in. Skin can slide off in a strip; peel it under about 9 months.

Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.

Is peach a common allergen?

Common allergen No

Peach is not one of the nine common allergens, though it is a frequent trigger of oral allergy syndrome in older children and adults with birch pollen allergy — a tingling or itchy mouth rather than a systemic reaction. Cooking usually removes it.

Is peach healthy for babies?

Peach brings vitamin C and a modest amount of vitamin A alongside fibre and water. Nutritionally it is unremarkable but it is easy to eat, well accepted and useful for variety — and its fibre helps keep things moving once solids start.

Common questions about peach

Do I need to peel peaches?

Under about 9 months, yes — the skin can come away in a strip in the mouth. After that, if the peach is soft, skin on adds fibre and is fine.

Are tinned peaches okay?

In juice or water, not syrup, and drained. They are reliably soft, which suits a beginner, though they lose some vitamin C in processing.
