Green beans for babies
Green beans come out of the bag in exactly the right shape: long, thin and easy to hold. All you have to do is cook them soft enough.
When can babies have green beans?
From around 6 months, steamed until soft. Green beans are useful early because the shape does the work for you — no cutting, no shaping, just cook and hand over.
How do you serve green beans to a baby?
The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.
-
6–8 months
Steam whole beans for 8–10 minutes, until a bean droops when you hold it by one end. Trim the stem end. Hand over one at a time.
-
9–11 months
Whole soft beans, or cut lengthways into halves. Avoid short round segments.
-
12–18 months
Chopped soft beans, in a stir-fry, or roasted. Texture can be firmer now but still not squeaky-raw.
-
18–24 months
Family portions, cooked. Raw green beans are hard to chew and best left until later.
Prep tip
The doneness test is the droop: hold a bean by one end. If it stands up straight, it needs more time. If it flops, it is ready.
Storage
Fresh beans keep about five days refrigerated. Frozen green beans are picked at peak and are an excellent, cheaper option — cook from frozen.
Is green beans a choking hazard for babies?
Whole green beans are fine as long as they are cooked until floppy — the risk comes from firm, squeaky beans that snap into short round pieces. Undercooked green beans are one of those foods that look baby-friendly but behave like a hazard. Cook until they bend rather than snap, and avoid cutting them into short round segments in the first year.
Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.
Is green beans a common allergen?
Green beans is not one of the nine most common food allergens. Any food can trigger a reaction, though, so offer it on its own the first time and watch for hives, vomiting, swelling or a change in breathing over the next two hours.
Is green beans healthy for babies?
Green beans bring vitamin K, folate and a decent amount of vitamin C, which helps with iron absorption from plant foods in the same meal. They are not calorie-dense, so treat them as the vegetable alongside an iron and protein food rather than the substance of the meal.
| Vitamin K | High |
|---|---|
| Vitamin C | Good source |
| Fibre | Good source |
| Folate | Good source |
| Iron per serving | ~0.4 mg |
Common questions about green beans
Can babies eat green beans from a tin?
Yes, if you buy no-added-salt versions or rinse them thoroughly. Tinned beans are already very soft, which suits a 6-month-old, though they lose some vitamin C in processing.
Are green beans and runner beans the same for babies?
Close enough. Runner beans are larger and stringier — pull the strings off and slice them lengthways. Both need cooking until genuinely soft.
My baby gags on green beans.
Usually a doneness problem rather than a shape problem. If the bean has any squeak left, it is too firm. Give it another three or four minutes of steaming.
