Asparagus for babies
Asparagus arrives in exactly the right shape for a baby. The woody end has to go, and the smell afterwards is famous for a reason.
When can babies have asparagus?
From around 6 months, cooked until soft. Asparagus is one of the highest-folate vegetables available.
How do you serve asparagus to a baby?
The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.
-
6–8 months
Snap off the woody ends, peel thicker stalks, and steam or roast until a spear droops when held. Serve whole, one at a time.
-
9–11 months
Soft spears, or chopped into small pieces.
-
12–18 months
Spears or chopped, roasted or steamed. Chopped into an omelette works well.
-
18–24 months
Family portions, cooked.
Prep tip
Hold a spear at both ends and bend — it snaps exactly where the woody part ends. No guessing, no knife.
Storage
Stand asparagus upright in a little water in the fridge like flowers; it keeps four or five days that way rather than two.
Is asparagus a choking hazard for babies?
Cooked asparagus is soft in the tip and can stay stringy in the stalk. Snap off the woody base, peel thick stalks, and cook until a spear droops when held by one end. Raw asparagus is too fibrous.
Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.
Is asparagus a common allergen?
Asparagus is not one of the nine most common food allergens. Any food can trigger a reaction, though, so offer it on its own the first time and watch for hives, vomiting, swelling or a change in breathing over the next two hours.
Is asparagus healthy for babies?
Exceptional folate and vitamin K, with useful vitamin C and fibre. Its natural shape means it needs no cutting, which makes it one of the least effort-intensive vegetables to serve.
| Folate | Very high |
|---|---|
| Vitamin K | Very high |
| Vitamin C | Good source |
| Fibre | Good source |
| Iron per serving | ~0.5 mg |
Common questions about asparagus
Why does my baby's nappy smell strange after asparagus?
Sulphur compounds in asparagus break down into volatile molecules that pass into urine within about half an hour. Completely harmless, and roughly half the population cannot smell it at all.
Can babies eat the tips only?
The tips are the softest part and are a fine place to start. The stalks are good too, once peeled and cooked soft.
