Pancake for babies

Pancakes are the most useful thing in the baby-food repertoire, because you can hide almost anything in them and they cut into perfect strips.

When can babies have pancake?

From around 6 months, cut into strips, made without salt or sugar. A basic pancake made with egg, milk, flour and a mashed banana needs nothing else.

How do you serve pancake to a baby?

The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.

  1. 6–8 months

Make thick, small pancakes and cut into finger-width strips. Mash banana into the batter instead of sugar. No salt.

  2. 9–11 months

Strips or small whole pancakes for the pincer grasp.

  3. 12–18 months

Whole small pancakes, with fruit. Still no syrup.

  4. 18–24 months

Family pancakes. Fruit rather than sugar as the topping.

Prep tip

Make a double batch and freeze them flat with baking paper between. They toast from frozen in two minutes, which makes breakfast trivial.

Storage

Cooked pancakes keep two days refrigerated and freeze for three months.

Is pancake a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk Low

Soft pancake is low risk cut into strips. Very fluffy pancakes can compress into a wad if a baby stuffs — offer one strip at a time. Serve without syrup or sugar.

Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.

Is pancake a common allergen?

Common allergen Yes

A standard pancake contains wheat, egg and milk — three of the nine common allergens at once. That is efficient if all three are already introduced, and a problem if none are. Introduce each separately first, then combine.

Is pancake healthy for babies?

The nutrition depends entirely on what goes in. A pancake made with iron-fortified flour, egg, grated courgette and a spoon of nut butter is a genuinely complete meal in a hand-held shape. Pancakes also freeze in batches, which makes them one of the few things worth batch-cooking for a baby.

Common questions about pancake

Can I make pancakes without egg or dairy?

Yes — mashed banana, oat flour and a plant milk make a workable pancake. It will be denser and needs a lower heat, but it holds together.

Do baby pancakes need sugar?

No. Mashed banana, grated apple or date paste in the batter does the job with fibre attached. There is no reason to add sugar to a baby's food.
