Pumpkin for babies

Pumpkin is nutritionally close to butternut squash and sweet potato, and tinned pumpkin purée is one of the few convenience products that is genuinely just the vegetable.

When can babies have pumpkin?

From around 6 months, roasted or steamed until soft. Buy small culinary pumpkins rather than carving varieties, which are watery and bland.

How do you serve pumpkin to a baby?

The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.

  1. 6–8 months

Roast wedges until soft and serve one at a time, or spoon-feed thick purée. Tinned pure pumpkin needs no cooking.

  2. 9–11 months

    Soft cubes or continued wedges.

  3. 12–18 months

Cubes, mash, soup (unsalted), or blended into pancakes.

  4. 18–24 months

Family portions, roasted or in soup.

Prep tip

Check the tin. Pumpkin purée is just pumpkin; pumpkin pie filling is sugar, spice and often salt, and is not a baby food.

Storage

Whole pumpkins keep months somewhere cool. Cooked pumpkin keeps three days refrigerated and freezes very well.

Is pumpkin a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk Low

Cooked pumpkin is soft and low risk. Raw pumpkin is dense and hard. The skin on most culinary pumpkins is tough and should be removed for babies.

Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.

Is pumpkin a common allergen?

Common allergen No

Pumpkin is not one of the nine most common food allergens. Any food can trigger a reaction, though, so offer it on its own the first time and watch for hives, vomiting, swelling or a change in breathing over the next two hours.

Is pumpkin healthy for babies?

Pumpkin is dominated by beta-carotene and gives a large amount of vitamin A per serving. Tinned pure pumpkin purée — not pie filling, which is sweetened and spiced — is a fast, cheap and nutritionally sound option.
