Blackberry for babies

Blackberries behave like raspberries: soft enough to serve whole, high in fibre, and completely ruinous to a white babygrow.

When can babies have blackberry?

From around 6 months, ripe. Wild blackberries should be washed well and picked away from roadsides and areas that may have been sprayed.

How do you serve blackberry to a baby?

The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.

  1. 6–8 months

Whole ripe berries, or mashed into yogurt. Halve firm ones.

  2. 9–11 months

    Whole, for pincer practice.

  3. 12–18 months

    Whole, in yogurt or porridge.

  4. 18–24 months

    Whole. Family portions.

Prep tip

Mash blackberries through a sieve if the seeds bother your baby — you lose some fibre but get a smooth purée.

Storage

Very perishable. Use within two days, do not wash until serving, and refrigerate. They freeze well.

Is blackberry a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk Low

Ripe blackberries squash easily and are low risk whole. Under-ripe blackberries are firmer and worth halving. The seeds are noticeable in texture but harmless.

Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.

Is blackberry a common allergen?

Common allergen No

Blackberry is not one of the nine most common food allergens. Any food can trigger a reaction, though, so offer it on its own the first time and watch for hives, vomiting, swelling or a change in breathing over the next two hours.

Is blackberry healthy for babies?

Very high in fibre and vitamin K, with good vitamin C. Like other dark berries they carry a lot of polyphenols. Practically, they are a good self-feeding fruit that needs no preparation.

What blackberry brings
Fibre Very high
Vitamin C High
Vitamin K High
Manganese High

Common questions about blackberry

Are the seeds a problem?

No. They are small, harmless and pass through. Some babies dislike the texture; sieving fixes it.

Can I pick wild blackberries for my baby?

Yes, washed thoroughly, and away from roadsides, dog-walking paths and anywhere that may have been sprayed.
