Meat & fish
Crab for babies
Crab is a crustacean like shrimp, so it belongs to the same allergen group. Picked meat is soft and easy to mix into other food.
When can babies have crab?
From around 6 months, cooked, picked clean and mixed into other food. Crab is low in mercury and on the FDA and EPA best-choices list.
How do you serve crab to a baby?
The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.
-
6–8 months
Cooked picked white meat, checked for shell, mixed into mashed potato, avocado or a thick sauce.
-
9–11 months
Picked crab meat mixed into a fish cake or pasta.
-
12–18 months
Crab in pasta, rice, or on toast.
-
18–24 months
Family portions. Skip the crab sticks.
Prep tip
Spread picked crab meat on a light-coloured plate and go over it with your fingers. Shell fragments are hard to see and sharp.
Storage
Fresh picked crab keeps one to two days refrigerated. Cook and pick the same day where possible.
Is crab a choking hazard for babies?
Picked crab meat is soft and low risk once every fragment of shell and cartilage is removed — check carefully, because shell fragments are sharp and easy to miss. Avoid crab sticks, which are processed fish with a lot of salt and additives.
Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.
Is crab a common allergen?
Crab is a crustacean, the same allergen group as shrimp, prawn and lobster. Crustacean allergy is one of the least likely to be outgrown. Introduce on its own, at home, earlier in the day, with two hours of watching.
Is crab healthy for babies?
Crab is exceptionally high in zinc and B12, both of which matter for a baby after 6 months when breast milk supplies less. It is lean, high in protein and low in mercury.
| Protein | Very high |
|---|---|
| Vitamin B12 | Extremely high |
| Zinc | Very high |
| Selenium | Very high |
| Copper | High |
| Iron per serving | ~0.4 mg |
Common questions about crab
Are crab sticks the same as crab?
No. Crab sticks are usually processed pollock with flavouring, starch and a lot of salt. They are not a good baby food and they do not test crab tolerance.
Is crab high in mercury?
No. Most crab is on the FDA and EPA best-choices list. Avoid the tomalley, the soft green organ, which concentrates contaminants.
