Flaxseed for babies

Flaxseed has to be ground to do anything at all. Whole seeds pass through undigested; ground flax adds omega-3 and fibre to almost any meal.

When can babies have flaxseed?

From around 6 months, ground and stirred into food. Flaxseed is not one of the nine common allergens.

How do you serve flaxseed to a baby?

The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.

  1. 6–8 months

A teaspoon of ground flaxseed stirred into porridge, yogurt or vegetable purée.

  2. 9–11 months

Ground flax in porridge, yogurt or baking.

  3. 12–18 months

Ground flax in baking, smoothies and cereal.

  4. 18–24 months

As the family uses it, always ground.

Prep tip

Buy whole seeds and grind them in a coffee grinder as you need them. Pre-ground flax oxidises quickly and the omega-3 degrades.

Storage

Whole seeds keep a year in a cupboard. Ground flax must be refrigerated or frozen and used within a few weeks — it goes rancid fast.

Is flaxseed a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk Moderate

Ground flaxseed poses no choking risk. Whole flaxseeds are small, smooth and can be inhaled, and they pass through undigested anyway — there is no reason to serve them whole to a child.

Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.

Is flaxseed a common allergen?

Common allergen No

Flaxseed is not one of the nine most common food allergens. Any food can trigger a reaction, though, so offer it on its own the first time and watch for hives, vomiting, swelling or a change in breathing over the next two hours.

Is flaxseed healthy for babies?

Ground flaxseed is one of the richest plant sources of ALA omega-3 and of lignans. A teaspoon stirred into porridge, yogurt or a pancake batter is invisible and adds real nutrition. It is also a gentle stool softener, which is often useful in the early weeks of solids.

What flaxseed brings
Omega-3 (ALA) Extremely high
Fibre Very high
Lignans Extremely high
Magnesium Good source
Iron per serving ~0.6 mg

Common questions about flaxseed

Whole or ground flaxseed?

Ground, always. Whole flaxseeds pass through the gut intact — you get the fibre and nothing else.

How much flaxseed for a baby?

A teaspoon a day is plenty. It is high in fibre and a gentle laxative, so more is not better.
