Walnut butter for babies
Walnut is the tree nut worth introducing for its fats — it carries far more omega-3 ALA than any other common nut.
When can babies have walnut butter?
From around 6 months, thinned, introduced separately from other tree nuts so a reaction can be attributed.
How do you serve walnut butter to a baby?
The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.
-
6–8 months
Thin a teaspoon of smooth walnut butter with warm water or milk and stir into porridge, or spread paper-thin on toast. Ground walnut can be sprinkled into food.
-
9–11 months
Thin layers on toast, or ground walnut in yogurt and baking.
-
12–18 months
Thinly spread, ground into baking, or blended into sauces.
-
24 months+
Whole walnuts from around 4 years.
Prep tip
Ground walnut is easier to find than walnut butter and does the same job — sprinkle it into porridge or use it as a grip coating.
Storage
Walnuts are high in unsaturated fat and go rancid quickly. Store in the fridge or freezer and smell before use.
Is walnut butter a choking hazard for babies?
Thin all nut butters before serving and never offer a spoonful of thick paste. Whole and chopped walnuts are a choking hazard until at least 4 years.
Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.
Is walnut butter a common allergen?
Walnut is a tree nut, one of the nine common allergens, and it is among the tree nuts more often implicated in significant reactions. Pecan is botanically close and often cross-reacts. Introduce on its own, not on the same day as another new allergen.
Is walnut butter healthy for babies?
Walnuts carry more alpha-linolenic acid — the plant omega-3 — than any other common nut. The body converts ALA to DHA inefficiently, so walnut is not a substitute for oily fish, but it is the best nut option and matters more in a vegetarian diet. Walnuts are also high in copper and polyphenols.
| Omega-3 (ALA) | Very high |

| Healthy fats | Very high |
| Copper | High |

Common questions about walnut butter
Does walnut replace oily fish for omega-3?
No. Walnut gives ALA, which the body converts to DHA at a low rate. It helps, especially in a vegetarian diet, but salmon and sardines do something walnut cannot.
Why do walnuts taste bitter?
The skin carries tannins, and rancidity makes it worse. Fresh walnuts stored cold are much milder.
