Mackerel for babies
Atlantic mackerel is an excellent, low-mercury oily fish. King mackerel is a different species entirely and should be avoided — the names are close enough to matter.
When can babies have mackerel?
From around 6 months, choosing Atlantic or Pacific chub mackerel, which the FDA and EPA list as best choices. King mackerel is on the avoid list because of high mercury and should not be given to children.
How do you serve mackerel to a baby?
The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.
-

Flaked, bones checked, in fish cakes or on toast.
-
12–18 months
Flaked in pasta, on toast, or as a portion of fillet.
-
18–24 months
Family portions. Smoked mackerel is very high in salt — occasional at most.
Prep tip
Tinned mackerel in water is the fast route — drain, mash, mix with potato or avocado. It takes two minutes and carries the same omega-3.
Storage
Fresh mackerel spoils quickly — cook the day you buy it. Tinned keeps for years unopened, two days once open.
Is mackerel a choking hazard for babies?
Mackerel flesh is soft and flakes easily. Bones are the risk — check every flake with your fingers. Skin should be removed for babies.
Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.
Is mackerel a common allergen?
Mackerel is fish, one of the nine common allergens. Note also that mackerel is prone to scombroid poisoning if it has been poorly refrigerated — buy fresh mackerel from a source you trust, and cook it promptly.
Is mackerel healthy for babies?
Atlantic mackerel carries more omega-3 than almost any other commonly available fish, along with very high vitamin D and B12. It is inexpensive and available tinned, which makes it practical.
