Oat milk for babies
Oat milk is useful in cooking and porridge from 6 months. As a main drink it does not arrive until 12 months at the earliest, and only fortified, whole-fat versions.
When can babies have oat milk?
In cooking and cereal from around 6 months. Never as a replacement for breast milk or formula in the first year. As a main drink from 12 months only if fortified and unsweetened, and ideally with dietetic input, because the protein content is low.
How do you serve oat milk to a baby?
The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.
-
6–8 months

-
9–11 months

Can be a main drink from 12 months if fortified and unsweetened, and if the rest of the diet carries enough protein, fat and calcium.
-
18–24 months
As the family drinks it. Whole-fat and fortified.
Prep tip
Check the carton for added calcium and vitamin D and for the words 'no added sugar'. Barista versions often contain added oils and sometimes sugar.
Storage
Refrigerate after opening and use within the stated period, usually five to seven days.
Is oat milk a choking hazard for babies?
No choking risk.
Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.
Is oat milk a common allergen?
Oat milk carries no common allergens in itself, though oats are often processed alongside wheat — check for a gluten-free label if that matters. It is not suitable as a milk substitute in cow's milk allergy without dietetic supervision, because it does not match dairy nutritionally.
Is oat milk healthy for babies?
Fortified oat milk supplies calcium and vitamin D, and it is a reasonable cooking liquid for porridge or a white sauce. Its weakness is protein — usually around 1 g per 100 ml against cow's milk's 3.4 g — which is why it cannot simply replace dairy in a toddler's diet.

Common questions about oat milk
Can oat milk replace cow's milk for my toddler?
Only with care. It has roughly a third of the protein and no fat to speak of unless enriched. If dairy is out, a fortified soy drink is the closest match, and a dietitian is worth involving.
Can babies under 1 have oat milk?
In food, yes. As a drink replacing breast milk or formula, no — not until 12 months.
