Tomato for babies
Tomato is one of the most useful things to cook alongside beans, lentils or mince, because its vitamin C and acidity both help iron absorption. Cherry tomatoes must be quartered.
When can babies have tomato?
From around 6 months. Tomato was once delayed over acidity; there is no reason to. Its vitamin C makes it one of the best partners for a plant-based iron meal.
How do you serve tomato to a baby?
The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.
-
6–8 months
Cooked into a sauce and mixed with pasta, lentils or mince. Or fresh, skinned and deseeded, cut into strips.
-
9–11 months
Quartered cherry tomatoes, skinned large tomato pieces, or in sauces.
-
12–18 months
Quartered cherry tomatoes, chopped fresh tomato, sauces.
-
24 months+
Halved cherry tomatoes from around 4 years; whole ones later.
Prep tip
Cook tomato with a little olive oil. Lycopene is fat-soluble, so a splash of oil substantially increases how much your baby absorbs.
Storage
Keep tomatoes out of the fridge — cold destroys the flavour. Cooked tomato sauce keeps four days refrigerated and freezes very well.
Is tomato a choking hazard for babies?
Cherry and grape tomatoes are round, firm-skinned and airway-sized — the same hazard class as whole grapes. Quarter them lengthways for every child under about 4 years. Large tomatoes are softer; remove the skin, which slides off in a sheet, for babies under 12 months.
Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.
Is tomato a common allergen?
Tomato is not one of the nine common allergens. Its acidity commonly reddens the skin around a baby's mouth, which is contact irritation rather than allergy.
Is tomato healthy for babies?
Tomato brings vitamin C and lycopene, and cooking increases lycopene availability substantially — a tomato sauce is nutritionally better than a raw tomato in that respect. The acidity also helps release iron from plant foods cooked alongside it, which is why a lentil-and-tomato dish works so well.
| Vitamin C | High |

Common questions about tomato
Do cherry tomatoes really need quartering?
Yes, lengthways, until around 4 years. They are the same shape and size as grapes and appear in the same choking data. Halving is not enough — quarter them.
Is tinned tomato okay for babies?
Yes, and it is often higher in lycopene than fresh. Buy no-added-salt tins and check for added sugar in passata and sauces.
