Turnip for babies

Turnip is an underrated root for babies: it mashes as smoothly as potato, it is cheap, and it is milder than most people remember.

When can babies have turnip?

From around 6 months, peeled and cooked soft.

How do you serve turnip to a baby?

The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.

  1. 6–8 months

Peel, cut into wedges, boil or roast until soft, and serve as spears or mashed.

  2. 9–11 months

Soft cubes, or mashed with potato.

  3. 12–18 months

Cubes, mash, roasted wedges, or in a stew.

  4. 18–24 months

    Family portions, cooked.

Prep tip

Half turnip, half potato makes a mash that tastes like potato but carries more vitamin C and less starch.

Storage

Keeps two weeks refrigerated. Cooked turnip keeps three days and freezes as mash.

Is turnip a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk Low

Cooked turnip is soft and low risk. Raw turnip is hard and peppery and should not be given. Peel before cooking — the skin is bitter.

Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.

Is turnip a common allergen?

Common allergen No

Turnip is not one of the nine most common food allergens. Any food can trigger a reaction, though, so offer it on its own the first time and watch for hives, vomiting, swelling or a change in breathing over the next two hours.

Is turnip healthy for babies?

Turnip carries a good amount of vitamin C for a root vegetable, which helps with iron absorption from a plant-based meal. It mashes well and blends into potato mash to add vegetable content without changing the texture — useful during picky phases.

Common questions about turnip

Turnip or swede?

Interchangeable for a baby. Swede is sweeter and orange-fleshed with more vitamin A; turnip is sharper and higher in vitamin C. Both need peeling and cooking soft.

Are turnip greens usable?

Yes, and they are nutritionally strong — high in calcium and vitamin K. Cook them like kale and chop finely.
